If you own a restaurant, office or hotel, your website needs to show your business at its best. Investing in some commercial interior photography will set you apart from your competitors. The aim is to enhance the appearance of your property: as a professional photographer I use my knowledge of lenses, lighting and software to produce great-looking creative images. Where possible I try to capture the interior of the building using natural daylight: in the picture above there is daylight flooding into the room from both ends, aided by the spotlights in the kitchen area.

When I’m shooting commercial interior photography I try to look out for the small details that make the difference. Customers appreciate the homely touch therefore by placing some fruit on the table I added warmth to the scene.

I always make sure that the vertical and horizontal lines are straight – especially when photographing buildings as it creates a sense of order in the photos. The trick is to use a tripod and careful alignment of the camera to make sure that everything looks as neat as possible.

I recently produced commercial interior photography at a new Derby restaurant – Binary in Mickleover. I was commissioned by the company that supplied and fitted the wooden flooring to show the way the wooden tiles enhance the appearance of the restaurant. It’s a dramatic, modern building and the tasteful wooden flooring alongside the leather seats lend a classy feel. The large windows let in plenty of light, augmented by lampshades over the tables, and highlighters directed at the walls. As the restaurant was preparing for the lunchtime session the tables were laid with cutlery and glasses which added visual interest. The resulting photos will be used as part of a case study featured on the company’s website, and are also featured on Binary’s website.

Covid-19: Get your business restarted!

Over the past few weeks businesses of all kinds have suffered from the Covid-19 lockdown, either directly or indirectly. As a photographer I saw my work evaporate overnight because of concerns about safety and social distancing. It now looks as though there’s light at the end of the tunnel and people are beginning to think about getting their message out to potential customers. I’m able to be flexible in my approach and can offer various solutions for those needing photos safely and quickly: my business portraits and actor headshots are generally shot in a studio but there’s no reason why they can’t be relocated to a suitable indoor or outdoor location. I can also provide product shots either in my home studio or on location.

I recently completed a shoot during lockdown for an actor requiring headshots: we met in the centre of Derby and used several locations within a few minutes’ walk from the Marketplace to produce a range of appealing portraits. We were able to work safely, keeping an appropriate distance between us at all times.

As the restrictions on business are gradually relaxed it’s time to think about how we can rebuild our working practices in view of the continuing threat from Covid-19. I’m able to offer solutions for most photographic needs, with health and safety a priority.

Below is another example of a professional business portrait produced under the current restrictions due to Covid-19. We met in Derby City Centre and found a quiet corner where we could capture some relaxed shots for Terri’s profile.

A Day In The Life Of A Freelance Photographer

As a freelance photographer I get into some varied and surprising situations, one of the more unusual ones being the day I found myself togged up in full operating theatre gown, face mask and hat in order to photography an intricate surgical procedure on a cat’s leg!

The Veterinary Hospital contacted me because they wanted to update their website with a more modern look. The brief included shooting portraits of all the different parts of the hospital (including the exterior, reception area, treatment and recovery rooms and operating theatres), the procedures offered, animals being treated, and portraits of all staff (some with their pets).

This was clearly quite an undertaking and involved shooting in a variety of different situations and lighting. For the portraits I set up my studio in the conference room so that staff could come along when not busy with their patients. It was important to schedule their arrival so that dogs and cats didn’t meet in the corridor, and once there it was sometimes a challenge to get the excited/ fearful animals to face the right way for the camera.

Event Photography in Derby

As a Derby photographer I’m asked to provide event photography for all kinds of occasions. One such event is the annual Peak Awards ceremony held at The Roundhouse in Derby, a fabulous venue for any event. It’s a celebration of achievements by learners across the College and its many sites. for the past few awards ceremonies, and here are a handful of images from the recent event. The photographs are used by the College to promote its business in Press Releases, promotional material, on social media and in the prospectus. In addition to photographing the winners with their trophies I try to capture some of the atmosphere of the event as the guests arrive and enjoy the entertainment and their meal. In the business world event photography is an important tool for communicating a positive image to potential customers. [Read more…]

Business Portraits in Derby

Creating the right visual image for your company is a vital part of promoting your product in the modern business world. Of course, the product is what defines your business, but customers do like to be able to identify with the people behind the product, too. Consequently, companies are now very keen to use business portraits to present the human side of their business. As a Derby photographer I’ve been called on several times recently to provide corporate headshots and other portrait photographs for local businesses. Some companies prefer to have a location portrait as this can create a more informal look, where others opt to have a photo shoot with studio lighting and a white backdrop for a professional image.
