Every so often a commercial photography job comes along which is a little out of the ordinary. I was recently contacted by Origination, the Derby-based marketing agency, to carry out a location shoot of a sporting nature. It transpired that the location was in Darlington and the job was to photograph the team members of Middlesbrough FC wearing their new season’s strip. The team is sponsored by Adidas, so the shoot had to be carried out with careful attention to presenting the clothing in the best light, and to make the players look appropriately heroic. Being a photographer based in Derby means that I am well-placed to take on jobs all across the Midlands and further afield – recently I’ve travelled to Norfolk, Lancashire and North Wales for photo shoots. Despite the warning about never working with animals or children I have done both on more than one occasion. Here are some examples of my encounters with animals (more can be seen on the Portraits page of my website). Although I have shot pet portraits in the studio I find that the experience of going into a strange environment can be unsettling for the animal, and it is a more relaxing experience all round to take photos in the animal’s familiar surroundings. The arrival of the Olympic Torch in Derby brought thousands of people out onto the streets, all hoping to witness this historic event happening on their doorstep. Wildlife in Derby: spotted last September during the Derby Feste weekend. The event brings the streets of Derby to life for several days each year, with the opportunity to stick your head in a pig being particularly popular!
