Being a photographer based in Derby means that I am well-placed to take on jobs all across the Midlands and further afield – recently I’ve travelled to Norfolk, Lancashire and North Wales for photo shoots. Although we always complain about the state of our roads it’s still possible to move around relatively quickly from my central location.
For most location shoots I take a bag of essential equipment – the usual cameras and lenses, a tripod plus a flash unit for interior shots. This means I can travel light.

Location photography at Rockingham race track
The pictures on this blog are a case in point: I was asked to produce photos for The Racing School at one of the circuits they use for Track Days at Rockingham in Northamptonshire. They were in the process of updating their website for corporate and private customers. The brief was to produce shots of two “clients” receiving safety training from an instructor, and then posing with a selection of the high powered cars used for these days.
The weather was perfect – bright, sunny and warm, and the blue sky helped set off the colour of the cars. I was shooting hand-held as there was plenty of available light, though I did use fill-in flash for a few shots of the car interiors.
The models had a great time, especially when they were asked to drive the cars – very slowly – into position for a shot. I grabbed loads of shots as they adopted various poses around the track, and returned to Derby with a good range of images for the company to select for their website.
I provided their art director with thumbnails of the best images, and they then selected their favourites for me to run through Adobe Lightroom and give a digital clean-up.
