If you’re already working as an actor, or are looking to get into the profession, you’re going to need good actor headshots. This sounds simple, but it’s important to get it right, as it can be the key to you getting called for audition. I offer professional actor headshots in the Derby area, either in the studio or on location.
What is a headshot?
Actor headshots are a photographic likeness that shows you looking your best without trying to give a false impression. The headshot is literally that: a head and shoulders portrait. It can be shot in a professional studio or on location – the background generally won’t be visible. So long as the lighting (daylight or artificial) is doing its job, what’s important is that the headshot captures something of your ability to project personality.
How should I prepare for the photo session?
It’s not necessary to wear loads of make-up, or flamboyant clothing: the headshot should capture you as you really are (otherwise the casting agent will be very disappointed when you turn up for audition looking completely different). Make sure you are feeling well and have had a good night’s sleep. Also, make sure that you know where in Derby the photo-shoot is taking place: being late or getting lost is not conducive to a good photo session! You can bring a change of clothing – try something light and another top that is dark, but nothing that will distract the viewer from your key selling point: your face.
Any other tips for my actor headshots?
If you have long hair you could try different styles (up/ down), but the main focus of the photos should be on your eyes. A good actor can project a thought or a mood through their eyes: practice in the mirror so that you can get a range of “looks” to choose from during the photo-shoot.

Choosing the right photos
There’s always a temptation to go for the most flattering shot, but remember that the casting agent is looking for character as much as good looks. Your actor headshot should be one that commands people’s attention and creates an interesting “look”.
What should I expect from my actor headshots photo session?
The actor headshot session will take place in a photo studio in Derby (or on location if you prefer), and will generally last at least an hour. I obviously want you to be happy with the results, so if it takes longer that is OK. You’ll be able to view the shots as the session proceeds, and we’ll keep going until you’re satisfied. If you’d like to bring a friend for moral support that’s fine.
After the photo-shoot I will provide you with sample copies of all the shots for you to choose from. You probably only need one or two strong photos to use, but can select up to ten which will then be edited and supplied to you as high quality JPEG files either on CD or in digital form. The photos are copyright free, so you can use them as many times as you like. You can also have the photos as prints if you prefer.
